To enforce copy protection, the Amiga, MS-DOS, and Commodore 64 versions of the game require the player to enter a special password in order to play the game, which is contained in the instruction booklet. The NES version of the game does not have this capability, so no name entry screen exists for it neither does the Japanese Famicom cartridge version, although it allows the player to select Easy Mode or Normal Mode before starting the game. The original Japanese Famicom Disk System version of Castlevania has a name entry screen which allows the player to save their progress to the disk's memory (this layout was later reused and enhanced in Castlevania Chronicles).
